What is the reason for severe abdominal pain caused by an overly strenuous ab work-out?

On Sunday evening I did an ab workout consisting of crunches, sit-ups, "rowing" and other ab exercises. I do not have definied abs and I did too much for what my body could handle. The next day (Monday) I became very sore in all ab muscles (which was expected) and it grew worse towards the evening. On Tuesday the pain persisted and I had to walk around for much of the day, the pain got progressively worse throughout the day, and I could not stand-up perfectly straight. Today the pain is still there, and getting worse, and I have noticed that my stomach seems to look and feel larger, like it is bulging out, and even when I try to stand up straight and suck it in (which is excrutiating) it still sticks out more than normal. The pain is also starting to make me feel nauseous, and almost like I have an upset stomach as well. I am concerned that I may have a hernia or some other internal injury, or maybe it’s just strained muscles? Any ideas?
Lower ribs have been very sore during this time as well.

It sounds like you overdid it alright! When unprepared muscles are pushed past their limit, inflamation and pain are the general response. Have you tried taking an OCD, and applying moist heat? This should be enough to relieve you. However, if a full week has passed and you haven’t improved, or feel worse, see a doctor. And next time, don’t try to do too much: the results can be contrary to what you seek.

That sounds really extreme. I was thinking hernia before I finished reading your question. I’d make a doctor’s appointment now if I were you. If it gets better, you can always cancel, but please have it checked out. If you have no money or insurance, go to the emergency room, they will help you.
